About The Open Door Community

The Open Door Community is a grassroots organisation dedicated to supporting individuals and families experiencing hardship. We believe that no one in our community should have to face food insecurity alone.

Through food relief, practical support, and compassionate case management, we aim to provide not only immediate assistance but also connection to services that help people move forward. Our mission is to create a welcoming and supportive environment where people can access help with dignity and respect.

At The Open Door Community, we believe that sometimes all someone needs is an open door, a listening ear, and a helping hand.

Why I started The Open Door Community

Why I started The Open Door Community

My Name is Trista and this is my story.

I am a Proud Garingbal women born on Gundungarra Country and raised on Dharawal country.

I was born and raised in the Wollondilly region, where my family has lived for generations. This community is home to me, and it’s a place I care deeply about. But over the years I’ve also seen, time and time again, how areas like ours often miss out on the services and supports that many people rely on.

I was raised by a strong single mother who did everything she could to provide for our family. Watching her work hard and sacrifice so much taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of helping others when they are struggling.

Today I’m a single mum myself, raising three children. I understand first hand the pressure and the fear that can come with trying to make ends meet. There have been times where I’ve had to make the heart breaking choice between paying bills or putting food on the table for my kids. Those moments stay with you, and they change the way you see the world.

Through my work as a caseworker supporting vulnerable people, I see every day just how many individuals and families in our community are facing the same struggles. I see the gaps in services, the lack of support available locally, and the heartbreakingly reality that many people simply don’t know where to turn for help.

That is why I created The Open Door Community. I wanted to build something for our community — a place where people can come without judgment, where they can access food relief, support, and someone who genuinely cares.

My hope is that The Open Door Community becomes exactly what its name represents: a place where people know there will always be an open door, a listening ear, and a helping hand when they need it most.

I was raised to not judge someone for their hardships or the mistakes they have made in life rather to support them and walk along side them while they need this support.

4 Weeks of The Open Door Community 💛

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been four weeks since we opened the doors to The Open Door Community.

In such a short time, we have been absolutely amazed by the kindness, generosity, and support from the Wollondilly, Wingecarribee, and Camden communities. What started as an idea to help people in need has quickly grown into something so much bigger—because of all of you.

From donations of food and essentials, to people reaching out, sharing our posts, and offering a helping hand—every single act of support has made a real difference. You’ve helped us put food on tables, support families doing it tough, and remind people that they are not alone.

We’ve seen first hand what a strong, caring community can do when people come together with the same goal: to support one another.

In fact, the support has been so incredible that we are already outgrowing our current space. We are now on the lookout for a commercial space that will allow us to expand, store more donations, and continue helping even more families in need.

There is still so much need, and we’re only just getting started—but these first four weeks have shown us what’s possible when a community stands together.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We truly couldn’t do this without you 💛

If you know of any available commercial spaces, or would like to support us through donations, sharing our page, or getting involved, we would love to hear from you.
